A Romantic Getaway to London for Christmas 2020

A Romantic Getaway to London for Christmas 2020

Escape to London and Discover Why Love is in the Air this Festive Season

The work Christmas party is cancelled. You’re hosting Christmas dinner for 2. Travelling abroad is out of the question. But all is not lost. While Christmas is going to be different this year, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy the festive season with your significant other in the nation’s capital and still stay both safe and legal in line with the tier 2 covid rules.

London is unlike any other city, and this is even more so at Christmas time. With its lights, mistletoe, and mulled wine, you’ll soon forget Paris, and realise that London has everything you need for a romantic Christmas getaway. Berrys Coaches can get you there; quickly, conveniently and on budget.

Take a look at our weekend guide for an overnight weekend stay during Christmas 2020.

Accommodation

As you are staying for one night, location is key. I would suggest if you want to make the most of London’s nightlife then staying in the heart of the action makes a lot of sense. Hub by Premier Inn Spitalfields, Brick Lane offer contemporary, comfortable lodging in city-centre locations for a tiny price. This puts you close to major attractions as well as hipster central, Shoreditch, home of some of the better nightlife. At the time of writing a bigger room on Saturday night was £58. This price offers incredible value for money. The rooms are pod-like, but as a place to rest in the heart of the action, it’s hard to beat.

Day 1

11.45am-Midday

Arrive in Hammersmith by Berry’s Coach.

12.15-12.30

Drop the bags at the hotel. The quickest and cheapest way to get to the hotel is via the District Line and get off at Aldgate East.

5pm Your own Igloo at Skylight Rooftop

Time: 2 hours

Cost: £60 (includes welcome drinks)

Skylight features your very own personal igloo. While it’s not made of ice, it’s more like a small crystal dome, there’s plenty to love. The 360° views of the city skyline, master cocktail creators and an alpine-inspired street food menu all add up to a great winter experience. The igloos are super snug and have blankets and cushions to ensure you stay comfy while you settle in with your significant other, and tucked away in your own space couldn't be more covid-safe. Grab a jug of mulled wine, snack, and settle down to watch the sunset over the London skyline. Gorgeous.

After you’ve finished, get the Overground (orange line) from Shadwell to Shoreditch High Street.

7.30 Dinner at Dishoom Shoreditch

Time: 2 hours

Cost: Anticipate £25 per head not including drinks

Forget your stale naans, and a pickle tray on a lazy susan, Dishoom serves contemporary Indian style food for the 21st century. In a wood lined building that looks nothing like your local curry house you can enjoy a range of Indian street food, and classics with a modern twist. If you are feeling particularly Christmassy you could try their Turkey Raan – a whole turkey leg, cooked slowly over a day until meltingly tender, and served with a spicy cranberry chutney. It shouldn’t work – but I bet it does.

9.30 Cocktail Joints of East London

Time: However long you want

Cost: Depending on your consumption – average cocktail £8

After EastEnders and the Krays, London’s east end is probably now best known at the go-to nightlife capital of London. It’s very hard to put a foot wrong as every bar boasts mixologists offering you every cocktail you could think of (and some you probably hadn’t). However, to make your money go a little further, or to hold back to splash the cash on that expensive Christmas present for your other half instead. Try starting the night at All Bar One Shoreditch and take advantage of their happy hour. Then move onto The Cocktail Trading Company (slightly more upmarket, so just drop by for one). They do a masterclass if you wanted to learn how to mix your own…After that try Callooh Callay for a Continental Kiss cocktail – we’re aiming for romance here, right?

You then might round off the night with a late-night visit to a karaoke bar, so you can perform your romantic Christmas duet to anyone who will listen. Just make sure it’s more ‘All I Want for Christmas is You’ and less ‘Fairytale of New York’. Either way Lucky Voice has you covered.

Day 2

10am Victoria Park

TIME: 2hrs

COST: Free

There’s nothing like a romantic walk through the park to brush away the cobwebs from the night before. Grab a coffee and a croissant at the Pavillion Café inside the park then take a leisurely stroll hand in hand. Stop for a break by the Chinese pagoda, just by the waterside before continuing on to the western-most corner, where it’s a short walk to the next stop.

1pm Fox in a Box Escape Room

TIME: 90 mins

COST: Approx £30 pp

I propose that you don’t truly know yourselves as couple until you have both screamed at each other while trying to escape from a puzzle room. Seriously though, while this may be a left-field choice, escape rooms really highlight how well people work together and communicate. Use it as an opportunity to collaborate and bond, rather than call each other an idiot for not escaping on time. It’s just a bit of fun. Santa hats are optional for this activity, but strongly encouraged to add to the festivities.

2.30 Head back to the hotel to collect your bags

Take the 242 bus from Fox in a Box to Brushfield Street.

2.45 Christmas Lights Tour of London

Time: 2 hours

Cost: £1.50 p/p

What a lot of people don’t realise is that if you know London’s bus routes well enough you can simply hop on the right one to get a tour of several of London’s major landmarks for the price of a normal bus ticket. One such route is the number 8 bus from Primrose Street towards Tottenham Court Road. It’ll take you past the Tower of London, St Pauls and right through the heart of London, top the tip of Oxford Street. Hop off and take a walk down the street to see all the Christmas lights in full glow. It’s a picture-perfect end to the weekend.

At the end of Oxford Street take the short walk down to Green Park station to pick up the Piccadilly Line which will take you all the way back to Hammersmith in time for your coach back home between 5.30-6.00pm.

We hope you enjoyed these ideas for your romantic weekend in London. If you want to bring this guide to life, Berrys Coaches is a convenient, affordable way to visit the capital. With our London Superfast service, you can be in the capital in no time at all. Why wait? Book now.

While the timings offer a rough guide, the time you spend at each activity will vary from group to group. You are ultimately responsible for getting back to the coach on time, so do make sure you give enough time for any potential travel delays. Passengers should be back at Hammersmith Bus Station (Stop D) at least 15 minutes prior to the pre-booked departure time. Unfortunately, the coach is not able to wait if you are running late.

London transport costs are a rough guide. The London Underground will usually be a lower-cost alternative to a taxi or Uber. The Underground is charged per person, whereas Uber is charged per vehicle. Depending on the journey, one may be cheaper than the other. Remember walking is free!

Prices were checked on writing this blog. Please always check venues prior to travel in case of any changes due to COVID-19. Please ensure you bring a face mask and hand sanitizer with you during your trip.
