To drive or take a taxi from our drop off:

1. Exit Heron Gate onto Hankridge Way and head toward the A38 / Bridgwater Road roundabout.

2. Head north on Bridgwater Road (A38) through Bathpool and continue onto the A3259 toward Monkton Heathfield.

3. Turn left onto Monkton Heathfield Road / Church Hill, following it directly into the village of West Monkton.

4. The Church will be directly ahead, with its distinctive 88-foot tower dominating the village centre.

While a church has occupied this site since Anglo-Saxon times – when King Ine of Wessex granted land in Monkton to Glastonbury Abbey in the 8th century – the medieval stone structure standing today dates back to the 13th century.

The building underwent extensive enhancement during the prosperous 15th century, when local cloth merchants funded the construction of its magnificent four-tier, 88-foot Somerset tower, complete with intricate pierced stone tracery and crocketed pinnacles.

Inside, the church preserves extraordinary artisan craftsmanship from the Tudor and Stuart periods. Highlights include a suite of 16th-century carved wooden bench-ends depicting traditional Somerset folklore and religious iconography, as well as an ornate Jacobean wooden pulpit dated to 1625. Having survived centuries of religious upheaval, the church remains a peaceful sanctuary and a living testament to West Monkton’s rich heritage.
