What is the History of Battersea Power Station?

Battersea Power Station is one of London’s most iconic Grade II* listed industrial landmarks. Designed in the Art Deco style by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott (who also designed the red telephone box and Bankside Power Station, now Tate Modern), the building was constructed in two stages between the 1930s and 1950s. At its peak, the station produced one-fifth of London’s electricity, supplying power to Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament.

After being decommissioned in 1983, the vast brick structure lay dormant for decades despite numerous redevelopment proposals. In 2012, a major restoration project transformed the site into a vibrant waterfront neighborhood featuring retail halls, restaurants, event spaces, and residences.

As part of the restoration, the original four iconic white fluted chimneys were meticulously rebuilt using the original construction techniques. The north-west chimney was specially engineered to house The Chimney Lift at Battersea Power Station, a custom-built glass elevator. Opening to the public in 2022, the lift ascends 109 meters to a glass viewing platform at the summit, providing unmatched vistas across London.
