What is the History of The Basins?

The Basins hold a significant place in Wellington’s industrial textile history. The deep, spring-fed ponds were hand-dug in the early 1800s by the Fox family, the Quaker owners of the nearby Tonedale Mill. They were designed as industrial balancing reservoirs to strictly control the water pressure and supply needed to drive the massive waterwheels powering the woollen mills down the valley.

When the mills eventually shifted away from water power, the industrial reservoirs were abandoned. Over the 20th century, nature beautifully reclaimed the deep water and stone sluice gates, transforming the industrial site into a lush wetland habitat. Today, managed by the local council and dedicated community volunteers, the historic mill ponds are a protected local nature reserve celebrated for its wildlife, offering visitors a prime habitat to spot kingfishers, herons, and rare dragonflies.
