What is the history of the Wellesley Cinema?

The Wellesley Cinema stands today as a glorious, living time capsule from the golden age of British movie-going. Designed by the celebrated Wessex architect Edward de Wilde Holding, the theatre officially opened its doors in 1937 during the height of the Art Deco architectural movement.  While the vast majority of Britain’s pre-war cinemas were either demolished or aggressively chopped up into cramped multiplex screens in the 1970s and 80s, the Wellesley uniquely escaped this fate. 

 

Today, it is recognised by architectural historians as an incredibly rare, virtually untouched example of a traditional 1930s single-screen cinema. The grand auditorium remains fully intact, seating 400 patrons across two traditional levels: the lower Stalls and a majestic, upstairs raked Circle offering classic vintage legroom.
