The History of Old Sarum

Old Sarum’s history is as layered as its earthworks. The site has been a significant settlement since the Iron Age, which later became a noteworthy Roman fortification. It was not until the Normans arrived in England that Old Sarum began to flourish as a cultural and military stronghold.

William the Conqueror established a castle here, which served as a strategic point for his acclaims. As the ecclesiastical powers grew, a cathedral was erected in the early 12th century, turning Old Sarum into a religious hub. However, disputes and the practicality of a better water supply nearby led to the relocation of the cathedral to what is now Salisbury. This marked the decline of Old Sarum, yet its historical significance remains undisputed.

Things to Do At Cathedral Close

Once at Old Sarum, visitors are greeted by a plethora of activities and sights. Begin your journey by walking along the towering earthworks, which offer stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

The ancient stones and ruins of the old cathedral skeleton whisper tales of medieval times long past.
