The History of Longleat House

Longleat House has stood as a beacon of grandeur and innovation since its completion in 1580. Built by Sir John Thynn, a prominent public official, the house was one of the first stately homes to be built in the Renaissance style, introducing the opulence and symmetry of classical architecture to England. Over the centuries, Longleat has witnessed numerous historical events and hosted many distinguished guests, from royals to celebrities. The house’s transition to a public attraction in 1949 marked another first in the UK, and the establishment of the safari park in 1966 showcased Longleat’s ongoing legacy of innovation and preservation.
